Michael Paull

Michael will take any and all participants through a well-known American folk song, and build harmonies off of the melody; first as a simple chorale, and then as something a bit more down-home and spicy. Those who are interested in exploring harmony singing with either a performing group, or simply as a casual pastime with friends should find much of interest here. Come ready to do lots of singing!
Instructor bio: Michael Paull teaches all skill levels on piano, incorporating early jazz, classical (including Ives and Copeland), folk blues, country, rock n' roll and any creative mixture of these styles for composition and improvisation. Michael performs his own works frequently and coordinates other performers for benefits and various local music events.
Marvin Gruenbaum

This hands-on workshop will focus on developing bowing skills for Bluegrass and "swing" styles, techniques for improving tone production, and on jam "etiquette." Also, some instruction on "mapping your instrument" for better improvisation skills.
Instructor bio: Marvin Gruenbaum is a charter member of the Kansas City Symphony viola section, having served continuously in that capacity since the orchestra?s inception in 1982. He is also an eclectic string player, having gained notoriety as a Bluegrass fiddler and a Jazz violinist. Additionally, he has taught violin, viola and alternative fiddle styles privately for the past 30 years, and has served as a clinician for fiddle workshops, violin and viola master classes, and jazz camps.
Richard Faris

Swing guitar is an advance class for those who wish to learn more about structuring chords and stringing them together to form complex rhythm for back up of a fiddle player, or blues and western swing tunes. Players who already have a grasp of several chords and some basic theory of music will learn much from this workshop.
Instructor bio: The lead singer and guitar player for the Faris Family Bluegrass Band has given Richard Faris the musical chops to play many styles of music. The bands show consists of bluegrass, swing, folk, and blues repertoire to keep the folks guessing. Richard also builds his own line of guitars while repairing instruments with Steve Mason Luthiers. Lending him a knowledge of the instruments most developed players don't possess.
Byron Wiley
3:45-5:00pm, $10—at Americana Music Academy
Participants should have some fairly solid playing skills (two or three
years worth). I will of course modify the workshop as needed to meet the
needs of the participants that come. I will likely teach tunes by ear but
will have transcriptions for the tunes taught. Possible tunes with harmony
may include a vals (waltz), schottis (schottische), pols and polska.
Instructor bio: Byron has been active in the Lawrence music scene since 1989 and has been playing Scandinavian folk dance tunes since 1992. He has attended workshops in the States and studied Swedish folks dance music in Sweden at a folk high school. He is active in the Hardanger Fiddle

Squiggle Puppet Productions proudly presents a modern re-telling of the
old-school fairy tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff. A Chicken who wants to
be a "free-range bird" and a talking banana are just a few of the bizarely
entertaining characters in this family friendly puppet show. This
presentation of The Three Billy Goats Gruff has been specially adapted for
the Fiddling and Pickin' Championships. Stick around after the show for a
behind the scenes Q and A session.
Instructor bio: Spencer Lott is a local puppeteer currently working towards
an undergraduate degree in Theatre from the University of Kansas. Spencer
started Squiggle Puppet Productions when he was 16 and has been performing publically ever since. As a young puppeteer he has studied with Sesame Street, as well as the Paul Mesner Puppets and many others. More information can be found at www.spencerlott.blogspot.com

Have you gotten comfortable with a particular jam session just to find
you are out of your element when you walk into a jam with a different
group of people playing a different style of music? This session will
address some of the differences and similarities of jam rules as they
apply to different genres of music as well as some specific quirks
Martha has noticed when she jammed with people in different regions of
the United States. Martha will be joined by Steve Mason, Rick Faris and others to demonstrate differences in traditional musical styles and tell you what luthiers wish everyone knew.
Instructors bios:
Martha Haehl, co-author (with Mike Walker) of "Play Well with Others, A Musician's Guide to Jamming Like a Pro" plays multiple instruments (12 at last count) and is a song writer and marathon jammer. In her many years as a musician, she’s played with numerous groups from acoustic to jazz to rock ‘n’ roll. While a member of Rosy’s Bar and Grill, Martha performed on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion radio program. Martha is now in a group appropriately called Checkered Past

Steve Goeke

-Alternative tunings – i.e. Double C, G modal etc.
-Tune development, embellishment and variations
-Right and left hand techniques
-Reading and using tablature
-Playing and singing at the same time
-Topics of general interest brought up by the participants.
Instructor bio: 40 years a banjo player currently playing with The Alferd Packer Memorial String Band. He has a strong interest in the lore, methodology and technique involved in playing the clawhammer style, as well as building and repairing banjos.
Scott Tichenor

We'll look at some of the basic chords, how they're fingered, why
there are incorrect fingerings you will want to avoid, why knowing
more than one D or G chord is important, and why a solid understanding
of chords will improve your music skills for any style of music. As
time permits we'll cover some alternative chords that are appropriate
for all skill levels.
Instructor bio: Scott Tichenor is the owner and webmaster of the Mandolin Cafe and a Mel Bay author with over 30 years of performing and teaching experience.
