Old-Time Fiddling

Tricia Spencer
10:00-11:00pm, $10
Tricia's old time fiddle style makes an audience wake up and dance. She will share some of her tricks of improvisation and ornamentation. Beginners will get something out of this class, but having a little mastery of the instrument will be helpful.
Instructors bio: Tricia learned fiddle at the knee of her grandfather, 1985 Kansas State Fiddle Champion, Vernon Spencer. She has been playing since age four. Her powerhouse old time style drives her band, The Prairie Acre.

Openback Banjo
Steve Goeke
11:15-12:15pm, $10

Topics coverd might include:
-Alternative tunings – i.e. Double C, G modal etc.
-Tune development, embellishment and variations
-Right and left hand techniques
-Reading and using tablature
-Playing and singing at the same time
-Topics of general interest brought up by the participants.

Instructor bio:
40 years a banjo player currently playing with The Alferd Packer Memorial String Band. He has a strong interest in the lore, methodology and technique involved in playing the clawhammer style, as well as building and repairing banjos.

Bass
Jim Faris
12:30-1:30pm, $10
A five time Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America Upright Bass winner will show you what you need to know to get into those jam sessions that you've enjoyed listening to.
-Beginning positions and technique
-What to listen for in other players
-Running patterns and Intermediate technique
-And How to SLAP That Bass!
Instructor bio:
Before he was born his mother says that he had the uncanny ability to kick in time. Growing up with his brothers, he learned bluegrass and old time music from his father (Bob Faris) and was a member of his family band that played together 15 years "the Faris Family", playing Upright Bass and Fiddle.

Ukulele
Linda Tilton
1:45-2:45pm, $10

This workshop is geared for beginning ukulele players who want to get their
feet wet playing the instrument. Topics will include: a brief history of
the ukulele, holding the ukulele, tuning it, strumming styles and chords.
We'll play a couple of well known songs. Bring a GCEA soprano, concert or
tenor-tuned or DGBE baritone-tuned uke and be ready to have a lot of fun.
Instructor bio:
Linda Tilton started playing ukulele when a friend gave her a banjo ukulele so she could play along in acoustic music jams. Research on her instrument showed it was made in 1926 by Sears and Roebuck. She also plays a concert sized ukulele. Linda is a member of the Kansas City Ukesters and has performed with them at several local events including this year's Buskfest in Lawrence.

Clogging

Lilly Mason
3-4pm, $10
Lilly Mason will teach you what to do with your feet when the music won't let you stand still. Wear hard soled shoes or tap shoes.
Instructor bio: Lilly Mason learned to clog from the one and only Steve Mason with a little help from Ellie and Lela Grace and the Fiddle Puppets. She began her career with the Barnstorm Cloggers, then grew up with Rhubarb Pie and danced (and Fiddled) with JR and the Juniors. Recently she's been free-styling. When not clogging she spends her days passing on music to the next generation.
