2008 Performers

Dan Bliss
website
Dan Bliss took second place in 2005 and third place in 2007 in the INTERNATIONAL FINGERSTYLE GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIP at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS. He won first place in fingerstyle guitar at the 2005 Kansas State Fiddling & Picking Championships in Lawrence, KS.

Originally from upstate New York, Bliss has made his home for almost 20 years in Kansas City, inspired by the traditions of blues and jazz and the incredible wealth of local talent. In addition to working as a solo acoustic act, he has also played electric guitar with the Kelley Hunt Band and his own band Bluetonium. These days in addition to solo gigs, he also leads a trio and occasionally appears with K.C. jazz guitar great Rod Fleeman.

The O'Shea Sisters
Website
The O'Shea Sisters recieved 2nd place at the Nebraska Bluegrass Festival Band Showcase in Lincoln. The O'Shea Sisters were named Vocal Ensemble Champions at the 2007 Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships!

The O'Shea Sisters are an up and coming sister duo that perform Bluegrass, Folk, Old-Time, Celtic, and Acoustic music. They have been performing as a group since 2004. Shannon, 15, has been playing the fiddle for a decade now, first learning in the Suzuki Method from Dorothy Risebigg and then later taking Bluegrass Fiddle lessons from Kansas Fiddling and Picking Champion and Fiddler for the Topeka band "PASTENSE" Diane Gillenwater. Erika, 17, took up the Guitar three years ago, also taking from Diane Gillenwater, and just recently has also been receiving lessons from Rick Faris, SPBGMA Guitar Performer of the Year and part of the award-winning family band "The Faris Family."

Thomas/DeLancey Trio with Scott Tichenor
Website
Linda Thomas: Linda holds a degree in Music Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching; her workshops are offered in many locations, including the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, AR and Davis and Elkins College, Elkins, WV. Linda’s instructional materials for Hammered Dulcimer are published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc.

Dan DeLancey: Dan has been playing guitar a great part of his life with earliest influence from the recordings of Doc Watson. Dan’s achievements include many contest titles in the flatpick style. Dan was profiled by Flatpicking Guitar Magazine (Nov/Dec 1997 and July/Aug 2001); in addition, FGM has featured one of Dan’s many arrangements on their Flatpicking ’98 CD. Dan Miller, FGM editor, calls Dan “a master arranger”.

Ronnie DeLancey: Completing the Thomas/DeLancey trio is Ronnie DeLancey on bass; whether playing acoustic upright of electric bass, Ronnie’s subtle style and impeccable timing contribute a solid foundation for the group. Ronnie is a former member of the nationally known bluegrass band, Last Kansas Exit.

Scott Tichenor: Joining the Trio will be Scott Tichenor on mandolin; his performance on mandolin is characterized by a unique tone quality and smooth style. Scott is certainly no stranger at the Walnut Valley Festival, having appeared in 1987 with Last Kansas Exit. Scott is also widely recognized for his popular website (Mandolincafe.com).

MAW
Website
Old-time fiddle tunes, hillbilly hollerin', songs about death and hard times.
MAW are a band of Lawrence women who like to make old-timey noise, so they decided to make noise together. They are all married to men who make noise, but are not trying to be like some kind of twangy version of Billy Childish or Holly Golightly (but if you want to make those comparisons, who's stopping you?). The rumors that the band is called MAW because all of the women in the band have kids is just a big fat lie. The rumor that the band is called MAW because they wanted to spoof PAW might be true. The rumor that MAW stands for Morphine And Whisky might also be true. Don't worry, they're not quitting their day jobs. And no, they can't play for your square dance club.
